The world’s greatest cyclists all went through the Junior ranks, where they got an early taste of international racing at the very highest level. Since 1988, the LVM Saarland Trofeo has provided the most promising Juniors a fantastic stage on which to measure up against their peers and gain experience for their Elite careers.
Starting as a one-day race, this German event has expanded over the years to its current stage-race format and has changed names several times. But its popularity, the quality of its organisation, and its international success have remained constant. The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) created its Men Junior Nations’ Cup in 2008 to aid the development of young riders, and the LVM Saarland Trofeo has been part of this series since then.
It is an important annual fixture that has seen the participation of some of cycling’s former and current stars. Not only is it a vital training ground for Junior riders, it is also an incredible and exciting race in its own right. This book illustrates the beauty of an event that attracts national teams from all continents. The magnificent scenery, the determination of the athletes, their joys and disappointments are captured in this volume that traces the history of the LVM Saarland Trofeo.
I am delighted these magical moments have been immortalised, giving us a wonderful reminder of some of the highlights of the last 37 years. As we look forward to the next exciting chapters of the LVM Saarland Trofeo, I strongly encourage you to take time to leaf through the pages of its rich history.
